Modern Construction vs. Medieval Construction

I watched two videos for my introduction to construction course. One was about the Tappan Zee Bridge which is a project that has been ongoing for several years now. The other was about using medieval techniques to build a castle in modern day France. The differences were astonishing and the pace of work is most likely a lot faster currently than what it was. These videos are linked at the bottom of this post.

The Tappan Zee Bridge, uses high tech machinery for construction. The materials are for the most part prefabricated and the assembly is mainly done on site. Building something like this would have been impossible during the medieval ages. I honestly can’t say too much about this project, it seems to follow the standards for modern day construction and for the most part seems to be a project in order to get rid of the older deteriorating bridge as well as improve traffic. Granted, the video was mainly a timelapse with subtitles so the amount of passion that can be conveyed in this video was most very minimal.

The medieval castle video was much more interesting to me. without using any modern equipment, the castle will be built by using primitive techniques.  It’s fascinating to see how much we have evolved as a civilization. The amount of effort that needs to be put into the project just for one piece of masonry is completely different from what we can do now. It’s also fascinating to see that the french culture of architecture is still being practiced and there are masons that are able to reproduce older styles of construction. Castles, for the most part, seem to be something from history or fairy tales, the fact they they are building a castle in the 21st century in addition to following an archaic construction style makes this building all the more special. It’s like going back in time and seeing construction happen in front of you.

The castle will take about 25 years to build versus the Tappan Zee Bridge, which arguably is a much larger project, is estimated to take about 4 years. The difference in time is incredible. If we use modern equipment to build this castle it will probably be much shorter. However, after watching these videos you come to appreciate how much we have changed as a civilization and what we are now capable of completing.
